Project Description

We designed and developed Manthan, a unified digital workplace platform for Munitions India Limited that connects employees across 17 units through a single ecosystem for communication, engagement, learning, HR services, and workplace operations. It replaces multiple disconnected systems with one mobile-first experience, backed by a web administration portal, for a large, distributed workforce.

Manthan overview

Problem

MIL's workforce relied on multiple disconnected systems, making communication, collaboration, and operational processes fragmented and difficult to manage at scale across 17 units.

  • Limited access to centralised information, with low participation in engagement and feedback.
  • Disconnected HR, learning, and workplace systems, and complex approval workflows.
  • No secure, role-based platform consistent across all 17 units.

Solution

A mobile-first employee platform supported by a web-based administration portal, bringing everyday workplace tasks into one connected place.

  • Employee experience — announcements, discussions and messaging, surveys, ideas and recognition, grievance and compliance handling, attendance, leave, salary and profile, plus courses and a knowledge hub.
  • Administration & governance — manage users, content, approvals, and workflows, and monitor engagement, participation, and operational metrics.
  • Role-based access and secure governance across all units, delivered mobile-first and consistent on web.

Design Process

The first job was subtraction, because a platform covering announcements, learning, HR, attendance and recognition can easily become a menu of everything and a home for nothing. We looked at what a worker across 17 units actually opens the app for on an ordinary Tuesday, which was a few things done often rather than many done rarely. Those few got the home screen, and everything else stayed reachable but one step further away. Adoption was the real risk, since nobody is required to open an employee app twice, so the first run had to make sense without training. Role based access was designed in early, because a supervisor, an HR administrator and a shop floor employee need different versions of the same screen. The admin portal was treated as a product in its own right, since the people approving requests use it far more than anyone uses the app. One component system runs both, which is what lets MIL add a module later without it looking bolted on.

The Result

By consolidating multiple workplace functions into one unified, intuitive experience, Manthan reduced complexity and improved access to critical services. Communication improved across all MIL units, employee engagement and participation increased, and operational and approval workflows were streamlined. Learning, HR, and workplace services now live in one place, with far less dependence on disconnected systems and manual processes, speeding up everyday tasks and decision-making.
